Total Contact vs. Metal?

NeuroMuscular Orthotics provides Total Contact orthoses only. We do not provide Metal/Leather orthoses of any type or variety.

Total Contact orthoses can be made out of thermoplastics or laminates. Both types of material are strong but lightweight, and function by distributing force over large surface areas of the body. The initmate use of circumferential shells allows joint alignment to be corrected in 3 planes of motion and allows new technology to be incorporated in its design. Clients can also change footwear at any time.

Metal/leather orthoses were originally designed in the early 1900's. The orthoses can be heavy and only provide corrective forces over a very limited surface area of the body (i.e  They only provide force on areas of skin covered by the metal/leather bands). The metal/leather styles also restrict footwear.
